Workshop on “Earth Science for Schools”

The GSSL has been conducting “Earth Science for Schools Programme” to promote the earth science education in schools of the country since 1996. The targeted group of this programme is science and geography graduate teachers.


24th and 25th ‘Earth Science for Schools‘ programmes

24th and 25th ‘Earth Science for Schools‘ programmes organized by the Geological Society of Sri Lanka were held very successfully at Embilipitiya and Hambantota respectively on 2nd and 3rd July 2015 very successfully.

The 23rd Workshop on Earth Science for Schools Programme

­The 23rd Workshop on Earth Science for Schools was successfully conducted with the collaboration of Education Department, North Western Province at Education Development Center, Wariyapola for school teachers of science and geography in the Province. Mr. J.G.N. Thilakarathna, Provincial Director, Department of Education of North Western Province was the chief guest of the workshop. More than 140 teachers partiworkshop1cipated in the oneday workshop. The following areas were addressed by the university academics.

  • Introduction to Minerals – Prof. Rohan Fernando, Dept. of Physics, Open University of Sri Lanka
  • Introduction to Rocks – Mr. L.R.K. Perera, Dept. of Geology, University of Peradeniya
  • Water Resources and Exploration H.A. Dharmagunawardana, Dept. of Geology, University of Peradeniya
  • Geology and Health– Prof. Rohan Chandrajith, Dept. of Geology, University of Peradeniya
  • Earth Surface Processes – Dr. Tilak Hewawasam, Dworkshop2ept. of Geography, University of Peradeniya
  • Geological Hazards and Management – Kapila Dhanayake, Dept. of Geology, University of Peradeniya

The feedback from the participants was very positive and they requested another workshop from GSSL for the teachers who were not able to participate in the event
